Optus Paravision
Using innovation to power an Olympic dream.
The Project
Matt Formston, Optus employee and Australian athlete, is the World Record holder for Tandem Pursuit Para-cycling. While most other cyclists are able to track their performance as they cycle, Matt has Macular Degeneration, meaning he has very limited vision.
Matt found it impossible to see important data while he was cycling. We worked with Optus and Matt to provide him with a new solution to this.
The Outcome
By hacking the signal given off by his high performance pedals, we were able to transfer data to a custom interface. This included pertinent information like heartrate, pedal rate and power.
Due to his limited vision, Matt needed a larger sized screen than traditional performance equipment had. We used a combination of UX, design and tech to enable him to track his performance at a glance, even as he cycles.
We’ve transformed the way Matt is able to train. He is now getting better times than ever, as he is able to track his power – meaning he doesn’t over-exert himself or go too slowly.
Responsibilities
Interface Design
Working closely with the Lead Experience Designer to ensure the minimum amount of information was being presented in the simplest way possible, maximising use of contrasting colours and bold type for maximum visibility.
Prototyping
A first of its kind app, I lead the integration of tech and design teams in collaborative problem solving while liaising directly with Matt to embrace his prototype feedback.
